Burn Out..

Rest is awesome. Rest is when the muscles regroup, repair themselves, and get stronger. I had a little bit of a "forced" rest this weekend, but I feel better for it.

Many of the half marathon training programs I've seen online (including Hal Higdon's here) suggest building the miles on the long run for a few weeks, then backing off for a week. Well, I was going to ignore that this Saturday and do another 8 mile run. That was the plan all week.

I ran 4.7 miles on Tuesday, ran 4 miles on Thursday (both longer than my normal weekday runs), and then went out to run 2 miles on Friday. On Friday's run, I could tell, I had pushed a little too far. Normally 2 miles is a piece of cake, but it was rough the WHOLE TIME.

I still planned on running my 8 on Saturday though.

Then, the weather says it's going to rain on Saturday. Pshaw... rain doesn't scare me! Wait, the local running store cancelled all the Saturday morning training runs in fear of flooding? Okay, I'm just going to ignore that...

Oh wow, my knees hurt. Oh and my calves. Okay, I'm just going to ignore that.

Hey it's not raining yet, I'm going to try and go out for as long as I can....

So, I dug out a water belt because I thought it would make things easier. It's like a fanny pack that has a place for water. Well, when I went out on my "8 mile run that has already turned into a whatever I can get before the downpour run"... the bag bugged me. It felt like I had a 5 pound weight hanging from my waist.

Here's what I had going against me;
- Possible overtraining- sore, heavy legs, hip flexors, knees.
- Rain and the possibility of flooding.
- Feeling generally uncomfortable because of stupid water belt.
- Emotional burnout.

So, after running .14 mile, I turned around and went home. I cried a little out of the disappointment, but I just couldn't do it.

I did Bob Harper's Yoga for the Warrior instead, which I needed.

I then took a really long nap with my daughter, ignoring my giant to-do list I had written for the day.

Looking back, I think I was just too tired. A lot of working out, a lot of not-sleeping enough, and just the general weariness from being supermom all week.

I'm okay with skipping the run. I will pick back up this week. There is a fine line between blowing off workouts and pushing too far. It's hard to find that balance... but I'm all about balance!

Review: Bob Harper "Yoga for the Warrior"

I have been meaning to review this title for a while now. I've done the hour long workout 3 times, so I feel like I can give a fair evaluation. Here goes

About me:
I used to be a yoga teacher. Besides my fitness certifications, I had a 200 Hour Yoga Alliance Approved training, and was allowed to use the letters "R.Y.T" (Registered Yoga Teacher) behind my name.

A few years ago, I grew tired of the yoga purists who would say if you haven't been to India, met Iyengar, and been doing yoga since birth, you weren't qualified to teach. I made my yoga something I enjoyed doing, and decided to quit calling myself a "teacher".

I stayed away from yoga for a few years after an altercation with an Ana Forrest fan, and after my son was born, returned to yoga ON MY TERMS. This means, making it work for me. I would no longer try to fit into one style- I did practices that made me feel good and filled my needs.

So, that will give you an idea of where I'm coming from in regards to this review.

Breakdown:

Bob starts off the workout by telling you how hard it's going to be. Like, this is going to be the hardest yoga workout you've ever done in your life. Your mind will be blown. Starting out, I had it in my mind it was going to be like the Insanity of Yoga. I was pumped. YEAH! (I mean, Ommmmm...)

We do the standard Sun Salutations warmups, and standing poses. There's a balance section with Tree, and Big Toe Pose. Short backbends are included.

Mostly, it's not that different from a standard "power" or "vinyasa" yoga practice. However, there is one difference: Bob's addition of "Shoulder Presses". Yes, these are right out of Insanity. From downward dog, he has you move into more of a pike push-up and you do almost a headstand. It's great for building shoulder strength. You do this twice in the workout, and it is quite effective.

Difficulty:
I think if you're already someone in shape, you could probably do this workout. If you're in shape and have never done yoga, you may be a bit confused. However, it's doable. I don't think I would recommend this to an absolute beginner, though. I think Bob has a Biggest Loser Yoga workout that is designed for that, so you could start there.

Music:

I actually really like the music in this workout. It's not your typical yoga music at all. It's like a combination of U2 and The Ramones. There is some rocking out going on during this workout. I love it.

Modifications:

One of the things that bugs me is that Bob repeatedly leaves out one of the parts of the Sun Salutation. Most go like this:
1. Inhale- Reach Up
2. Exhale- Fold Forward
3. Inhale- Look up with a flat back
4. Exhale- Fold Forward, jump or step back to chaturanga.

Well, he keeps leaving out step 3. It messes me up. I just add it in, but if you're a yoga purist, this may bother you.

Also, there's a section where he goes to table (all-fours) and does a balance move called "awkward airplane". Since I have grumpy knees (and since I recently hurt my knee in a pose like that), I avoid that, and instead practice my "crow" pose. This gives me plenty of time to practice (and fall over several times) and my intensity doesn't go down.

Overall Rating:

Overall, how much you enjoy this workout would depend on what you're looking for from your yoga. I'm using it to keep me limber between runs and also get some upper body work, and it works great for that (I think you do about 1000 chaturangas).

If you want to do the hardest yoga workout EVER, this may not be it for you. It's really not as hard and mindblowing as Bob promises in the beginning.

If you want to have a rest day and just do some mild stretching, this is not for you.

But, if you want to work hard, work your strength, flexibility, core and balance, and maybe get a little sweaty,  you'll love this video.

P.S. There is a 15 minute ab workout as a bonus. It's a really good core workout. I don't think it necessarily has any yoga influence, but you do get a good workout, and I'm always looking for ab work I can add on to other workouts.

Have any of you tried it? What do you think?

*Disclaimer- I was not given a free video or anything for sharing my opinion. I bought it, and decided to talk about it. Not to say I'm not open to reviewing stuff in the future, especially if it's cool and I get to keep it...

I'm being a social butterfly today and hoping to meet lots of new people through blog hops and FFF :-)

Please check out these folks and like them/follow them. If you're new to Uberlibriana, please leave a comment. I try to make it fun, so today, let's add a fun fact about yourself. For example, if I was commenting on my blog, I would say:

"Hi! My name is Sarah and I secretly really like the Fresh Beat Band."

(That's hypothetical of course).

Anyway, hop on over to this blog hop:

And then do some Facebook Following over here:

And don't forget to tell me interesting fun facts about yourself because I'm nosy I care.

An Incredible Machine

Here are today's "Songs to Run To":
Sugarland, The Incredible Machine
Adele, Set Fire to the Rain
Pink, Just Like a Pill, ***in' Perfect (I listen to the edited version), Who Knew (lots of Pink today)
Glee cast, Sing

Proof that the body is an "Incredible Machine"- me, about to run a 5K, 19 weeks pregnant.

I got an Iphone for my birthday, which makes it amazingly easier and more convenient to update my music. Also, I now have the Nike + app :-) Runs are changing for me FOREVER!

I ran 4 miles using the Nike +. This is the first time I've had something telling me where I was in the run at all times. It was amazing. I am now addicted.

I just want to say one thing. Chafing. Ow. I'm still about 10 - 15 pounds over my goal weight, and I wore shorts today for the first time in a while. Well, my inner thighs rubbed together a little too much and now they are sore. Dang it.

Just as I was about to finish my run, the Sugarland song "The Incredible Machine" came on. It was perfect. It was one of those moments. Here are some of the lyrics:

"A heart that beats
An incredible machine
Made of blood and love
And hope and lust and steam..."

Well, I definitely like thinking of my body as an incredible machine. I feel it getting stronger every day, as I inch closer to 40... :-)

Here's the video, in case you haven't heard the song!

(Also, I think I may want to get Jennifer Nettles' haircut...)

Counting My Blessings

I had a great run today, and during part of the run, I had no music, and just *thought*. Wow. That's something I rarely do. Just think. Meditate. So, I decided, rather than just report on my run (which ended up going pretty well in the end), I would count my blessings:

1. This girl is 6 months old today:
Holy moly. I know I'm her mother and biased, but dang! She's cute! I'm so blessed that she showed up- we weren't really expecting her and she was the best surprise ever. Well, besides this guy:

2. My little man:

He wasn't as much of a surprise. He kind of came along after I started to think, "Oh well. Guess it's not going to happen. Oh, wait, what's this? SURPRISE!" He made me a mommy, and he is the great love of my life. Well, besides this guy:

3. Baby Daddy/Love of My Life:
Yes, that's my man. I can't believe I got so lucky to have this guy and these two perfect children. Yeah, we have the issues that most families have... some mornings getting everyone out the door on time gives me Post Traumatic Stress... but overall, we have been blessed.

But wait, there's more:

4. My training is going GREAT!
I had a baby 6 months ago today, and I just ran almost 5 miles. I am within 10 pounds of my goal weight, and in a lot of ways, I think I'm physically stronger than before I got pregnant (I would have scoffed at running 5 miles, that's for sure). I'm pretty darn healthy for 37, if I may say so myself.

5. I have amazing friends:
Since I work full time and parent the rest of the time, I don't do much socially. But, I am so blessed to have a network of amazing friends with whom I keep in touch online. Many of them I've never even met in person, but I consider them my closest friends. These folks would do anything for me, and I for them.

6. I love our church.
We were lucky enough a little over a year ago to find a church that is PERFECT for us. I really feel like it's home. I get to see everyone there once a week, and well, the rest of the week online (Have I mentioned how much I love the Internet?)

There's lots more, and I could go on. I'm thankful for coffee, warm beds, baths, Glee, my new Kettlebell.... but I'll go ahead and stop.

I hope you'll consider posting a few of your blessings in the comments. I know it always helps me, no matter what kind of day I've had!

Have a blessed rest of the day!

Sarah
