Insanity, The Asylum: Speed and Agility

Holy moly.

Day 1 of Insanity: The Asylum. The workout is called "Speed and Agility". It uses the Agility Ladder and the Speed Rope (both come with the program, seen here:)
You can also see the Agility ladder here:
My daughter is doing some agility drills.

So, this workout taught me that I am neither Speedy nor Agile. I mean, really.

I watched the video ahead of time, and it looked kind of fun. It looks like you're just kind of playing with the ladder. Like a kid at recess.

Actually doing the workout? A different story.

1. I needed more room around the ladder. I kept having to move it. (I placed it on my yoga mat). You basically need space all around it.

2. I felt like I was hardly doing anything compared to the folks on the video.

3. I felt incredibly uncoordinated the whole time, and kept tripping over the ladder.

So here's a general breakdown of the workout:

Total workout time: 45 minutes

Warm Up
- Jump Rope Drills: Luckily, a couple of the cast members show it without a rope. There was no way I could do it (first sign there is colossal room for improvement). High knees, criss cross, etc.

- Agility Heisman: Using the Agility Ladder going side to side (this is hard to explain).

Repeat that, with a few variations. For 10 minutes.

Stretch (very short).

Drills that never end:
(I'm just going to list some of the big ones here. I lost track after while, and starting to forget there was life outside of this workout about 25 minutes in...)

Mountain climber progressions: You are in plank over the ladder, then you jump both feet in together to the first rung of the ladder. 20 seconds into it you can move up to doing it into the 2nd rung, then 20 more seconds, the 3rd rung. Right... (Compared to the cast I was doing this in slow motion).

Bear Crawl: All fours, crawl to the top of the ladder, then jump both feet into the square- all the way back then put the hands in the square (a variation of that move involves doing V-shoulder pushups and Tricep pushups in place of the hands in the square).(Oh my).

Shoulder Tap Plank Side to Side (This may not be the right name..): This is one of those moves that looks really cool and fun when you're watching the video, but in reality, it makes you kind of want to cry a little.

Squat thing: (This is terrible how I can't remember the names...): You jump with your feet outside of the ladder, then squat down and tap, then move to the next rung. I really liked this one, despite the fact that I couldn't remember the name.

I had to take a few breaks. My daughter kept throwing her bottle down, and every time I was so happy to have an excuse to stop so I could pick it up for her.

Oh, and at the end, Shaun suggests starting over and doing the whole thing again. I can't even express how hilarious and unlikely that is... if I ever *do* get to the point where I can do that, I will be a superhero and expect everyone to bow in my presence...

Shaun T.: WTF?
Shaun T. gets a little mean in this workout. I've never seen him like this.

"I don't want to see you standing around! Move!"
"Come on, you can move faster than that!"
" I bet you couldn't get away with moving that slow when you were in the army!"
"It only counts if you're tired!"

He lightens up a little later and does say you can take breaks and work at your own level... but for a while there, I was saying some nasty things back to him.

Overall, I've got TONS of room to grow with this workout, and that's a good thing, right?

This picture kind of says it all:

Beachbody Saturday: My Summit Experience So far

So, remember how last time I posted my picture with Tony Horton. Yes, it's getting ridiculous.
Tony Horton: My New BFF

Wait, Tony found out about the cake I had last night. He's not happy.
But it was a glorious cake.
I asked Tony if he would please tell me to stop eating crap. He yelled: "Sarah! Stop eating crap!" So, now if I am tempted to eat crap, I will remember Tony yelling at me.

Seriously.

I'm having a blast, and my time doesn't just consist of stalking Tony Horton, waiting for another photo op.

I'm meeting some pretty amazing people. I met one coach at dinner last night whose "WHY" (or the reason he is a coach) is to help veterans become healthier. He himself is a disabled veteran with a compressed vertebrae, and P90X has allowed him to function better than he was before. I was inspired by this guy.

I also am learning a lot. I attended a session this afternoon that I think has changed my life. It was about time management. You're probably saying "Yawn. What's spiritual about time management?" But it was so much more. When you realize how limited time is, you feel the need to prioritize your time a little better. The question was asked: Does your activity reflect your priorities?

That is a good question. Does it? I mean, honestly, think about your priorities. What are they?

Mine:

My family.
My health/fitness.
My church/community.

So, what are you spending most of your time doing? Is that benefiting one of these priorities?

As I continue to learn and have those "aha" moments, I can honestly say this is the experience of a lifetime. But, lucky me- I am already registered for next year's SUMMIT!

Stay tuned for more, including an awesome picture of me and Shaun T('s abs).

Super Saturday: Beachbody and an indoor 8 mile run.

The Beachbody Mission Statement
I had a big Saturday this weekend. Beachbody (I'm a coach) had it's quarterly "Super Saturday" event, and I was scheduled to run 8 miles. I wasn't quite sure if I would be able to do both. It took some effort.

I'm going to report on both....

Super Saturday

Beachbody organizes a nationwide event every 3 months. We had one nearby, and I really wanted to go.

I found a supercool babysitter who was willing to spend all day with my kids, and headed out with an awesome fellow coach...
I was very excited when I arrived!
Soon I was able to score an Insanity shirt

I spent some time looking around at the displays, and meeting a lot of coaches. I love meeting Beachbody coaches- they are some of the friendliest people.

This is my new friend Alton. He wrote and choreographed the "Shakeology Shakedown."

Oh yum.

It's like a fitness fanatic's heaven over here...
We had some coaches get up and tell their success stories. The cool thing about Beachbody coaches is they always have both a physical transformation success story, as well as a business success story. It was inspiring to hear.

After the training, we all got together to learn the "Shakeology Shakedown" dance. I took some video of an early rehearsal:

So fun. The closest thing to a group workout I've done in a while. I got a little crazy and worked so hard, I was sweaty at the end. I had accidentally worked out! (Don't you hate when that happens?) Normally, I would be thrilled... but I had that 8 miler coming up...

8 miler:

We made our way back to my house, and on the way home, noticed that the temperature was above 90 degrees. Oh no. I melt if it's above 75. How am I going to run in this?

I decided to make the leap and run inside at the gym.

Looking goofy and psyching myself up to run a lot.
I decided to start my run on the track. The track is comforting to me. I run faster on the track. It was loud, due to an activity going on down on the first floor basketball courts. That was fine, since my headphones were only working sporadically anyway (!!!). I just took off the entire fanny pack fuel belt and ran with no music or water or anything. Since I was doing a run 4/walk 1 plan, every few laps I would be walking when I came by the spot where my water bottle was, so I was able to take drinks pretty regularly.

I told myself I would do 32 laps before taking a break, since that would be almost 5 miles. After that, I took a potty break, texted to check in on the kids, and moved to the treadmill.

Since I'm doing the manual record keeping, here's my time for 32 laps (about 4.92 miles):

The treadmill was boring and awful and painful. I made it 2.08 so that I would be at a total of 7 miles. That was about as much as I can stand.
I hate the treadmill.
I went back to the track to finish up. I considered running 2 more miles on the track, but I realized I better not push it. I was having the following issues by this point:
- inner thigh chafing.
- I felt like someone smashed my pelvis with a hammer.
- My running was starting to look like a shuffle.

So, after 8 laps (1.23 miles) I stopped.
manual (literally) record keeping.
I walked a bit to cool down, and then stretched. I knew, however, when I stood up and felt the tightness, that I was going to be a bit sore. I was in a hurry to get back to the kids, so I did NOT stop for ice for an ice bath (the way things went, it would have melted before I had a chance to have a bath anyway, though. My kids had missed me).

Oh, but here's the best part. I went downstairs to weigh on the way out, and had this magical moment:
Finally under 150!
So, all in all, it was a great day. A busy day, and I could barely function afterwards... but a good day.

Thanks to all the great coaches who were so friendly, to my friend who drove on the way, and to the babysitter who was able to take care of both my kids ALL DAY. And my wonderful husband got takeout, which was wonderful.

How was *your* weekend? Any epic workouts? Did you get to relax?

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Being a Beachbody Coach...

What is a Beachbody coach?
A Beachbody coach is someone who has tried a Beachbody program or product, and is enthusiastic enough about it to want to share it with others.

What does a Beachbody coach do?
A Beachbody coach:
- shares his or her experience with the Beachbody products with others
- stays informed about new products and programs in order to share it with customers
- earns money from helping others get fit and healthy

Who should be a Beachbody coach?
- Anyone who is looking for *more*, more fitness, more out of life, more income...

You need the following to become a coach:
- $39.95 start up fee (see below), then $14.95 a month coach fee
- Enthusiasm about working out, the products, and being healthy
- A desire to be fit

You do NOT need the following to become a coach:
- Large investment

- A perfect body

Why should I become a coach?
- Built in accountability: As a coach, you now have even more motivation to stick to your program, reach your goals, and inspire others.

- 25% off all Beachbody products. Everything.

- Relationships and support: I have made tons of good friends that I would not know if it weren't for the Beachbody opportunity. I feel these folks have really enriched my life. Also, our team has a very active Facebook page with over 200 coaches who are there to support you and answer questions!

- I'm offering a special through the end of March: If you sign up to be a coach and sign up for Shakeology on Home Direct (which is recommend for ALL coaches: You have to be a product of the product to share its benefits), I will REFUND your start-up fee of $39.95!
