Fear...

“The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure.” ~Sven Goran Eriksson

I'm a little scared of this picture.

Do you have fears? Some fears are completely rational... like fear of a tornado when one has been spotted in your neighborhood. I personally have a mildly irrational completely rational fear of dogs after being bitten quite badly by a dog on a run.
Blood on my Nikes..
But I want to talk about a different kind of fear: The fear that keeps you from reaching your goals. The fear that keeps you from trying new things. The fear of failure/rejection that holds you back.

What is your biggest fear?

When it comes to realizing a dream, what is your fear? What keeps holding you back?

I want you to really, REALLY think about it.

Is it fear of failure? Fear of rejection? Fear of embarrassment?

Okay, I think I have the answer.

Here's what you do:
Step 1: Imagine the scenario where the absolute worst thing happens.

For example: In my senior year of high school, I liked a boy. I was terrified, but I sent him a secret valentine in French. I actually walked him behind one of my *friends (you know, one of those girls that you know but don't quite trust in high school?) translating it and telling him she thought it was from me. They laughed at me. I ran off and felt really embarrassed.

But, I look back 20 years later and realize: I survived. I wasn't physically hurt. I moved away and forgot that boy (I honestly don't even remember what his name was). And I'm also pretty proud of that 17 year old girl for taking a risk.

So, are you thinking about the worst that could happen? If it doesn't involve someone getting physically injured or killed, it's probably not as bad as you thought.

Step 2: Take action!

Have you ever heard this saying?

"Do the thing that scares you, and the fear will go away."

I promise there's something to it.

Are you ready to face your fear? If you are, and are ready to share, let us know in the comments...

And come visit us on Facebook. That's one thing you can do that SHOULDN'T scare you...

Weird Dreams...

I have had a few recurring dreams lately that are JUST SO WEIRD.
They all have 3 things in common: Being ridiculously late for something, Angel, and running.

In many scenarios, I'm busy doing something- sometimes running, sometimes getting kids ready, one time it was when my boss at work gave me about 100 cats to take care of, and they kept turning into people, then back into cats... and then I look up and it's 3:00 pm and I realize I'm *really* late for work.
I am really your coworker (from here).

Sometimes, in this dream, I have kids..  and when I look up at the clock I realize they're late for school. One time, all the people from daycare brought their kids to our house and we were supposed to take them to daycare and I forgot about them until 3:00. It's always 3:00, though.

One time, President Jimmy Carter was doing a book signing next to my house, but then it turned into a neighborhood watch meeting, which became an angry neighborhood watch meeting, and everyone was mad at my mom (who was walking around in a tracksuit with a gun).

Jimmy Carter: Because I don't have a picture of my mom in a tracksuit.

Last night, I couldn't sleep, so I watched some Buffy, then fell asleep and dreamed that Angel was my boyfriend, and Darla kept trying to kill me. And she was pregnant, so I could run faster than her.
Yum. "I love you so much I almost forgot to brood."

But the running part- the running part is usually pretty cool. The rest of the dreams are completely anxiety filled (except for where Angel's my boyfriend). But when I'm running, it's easy. It's how I imagine it must be for the people I see running effortlessly down the street. It's that perfect pace ALL THE TIME. No sore hip flexors, no sore calves or shins. Kara Goucher's Abs.Yummy running.

Anyone want to take any guesses about the meaning of this?

Looking for a Flat, Indoor Half Marathon....

Today, we have a tornado watch. Schools are closing in preparation for bad weather. Winds are something like 45 mph. So, I decided to give myself a break and run on the indoor track. I didn't get to use my fancy Nike + (It doesn't work indoors), but I did have the old fashioned way:

One of my favorite things about this pic is that you can see my sweat.
That was my time for 15 laps, which, at 6.5 laps per mile, calculates (at least with my calculator) to 2.3 miles. I told myself I would just do 2, so I did a couple of extra laps and then stopped.

My time was amazingly better than it has been outside with the Nike+, and if I wasn't such a hardworking, goal-oriented person, I would be tempted to do every run ever for the rest of my life on the indoor track (see the title of this post).... however, I know that's no fun. So, this will be the exception, not the rule. After the half is done (April 30), I am going to do speedwork, and the track comes in handy for that. (Besides, if I only run indoors, I won't get to work on my sexy sock tan...)

So, you'll remember that I do these runs at lunch, then wipe off with a wet rag before putting my work clothes back on and becoming a librarian again... here's what I looked like after today's run:
Trying to showcase the sweat on my shirt. Notice I'm still wearing supercool fanny pack.
And then, I went to the scale and weighed again. Exactly the same. But I have a plan...

I have friends who have done the Shakeology 3 day cleanse and lost 3-7 pounds... I'm going to do it as soon as my next order arrives. I've got to break this plateau, but more importantly, I want to get my cravings for JUNK out of my system!

Anyone else enjoy running indoors more than outdoors? Ever run in tornadic wind? Was I just being a wuss about the whole thing?

I Punch Excuses in the Face!

I'm sure everyone has had an excuse not to workout at some time or another. Sometimes, the excuses are completely valid- you're sick or injured, you're having a baby that day, your Christmas tree is on fire... But I'm determined to help you get past the excuses that keep you, day to day, from starting a regular workout program.

I asked for folks to send me their excuses. My challenge is to try to obliterate the excuses, so that everyone will be able to workout. So, let's get started:

*(These are real excuses from people. I promise haven't made any up.)

Time
- "I don't have time.
- Appointments all week long that has taken all my time. Driving here and there and waiting in waiting rooms etc. Then I am too tired to do anything. But, still has to manage cleaning up, cooking, helping with homework, office work, etc., before I crash into bed".

This is one of the top excuses I hear. I am also quite good at this excuse myself.
There are ways to deal with it:

1. Do your workout first thing in the morning, before anything else gets in the way. I get up at 4 am to workout since we have to leave the house before 7 am. It's hard, but sometimes it's the only way I can fit in the workout.

2. Put your workout on your calendar, like another appointment. Since I've been doing lunchtime runs, I put that on my calendar. If someone wants me to do something at 12, I say, "No, I have an appointment."

3. Speaking of lunchtime runs, this is often the only time I can run. I take my lunch hour, change into workout clothes, run outside, then come back and give myself a little "washrag bath" before getting dressed again. It's not ideal, but I just don't have time to take a full shower and redo everything. It's my way of making it work.

4. Do a shorter, more intense workout. There are days when I plan a long cardio workout, but I wake up too late, so I do a shorter, but more intense workout, like a Turbofire Hiit 15 or 20. I still burn lots of calories, and it's better than not doing anything.

Tired:

I am too tired.

There are times when you may actually be too tired to workout. However, if you are constantly tired, working out regularly could help you. If you feel like there's no way you can make it through a workout because you're  tired:

1. Tell yourself when you start that you're just going to do 5 (or 10 or 15 minutes). Then, if you feel like it, keep going past that number. If not, hey, you *still* did more than you would have if you did nothing :-)

2. When I was pregnant last time, I knew that by the end of the day, my energy would be gone. So, I *had* to do my workout first thing in the morning, or I physically wouldn't be able to. I recommend this to you if you get tired at the end of the day: Try it.

Injury:
- My ankle feels funny.
- I'm nearly 2 years into plantar fasciitis and no treatment has worked yet.
- My knees hurt.

If you have an injury, first of all, you need to be careful not to make that injury worse. Consult a doctor above all else. However, there are ways to work around injuries:

1. If your ankle is bothering you, do an upper body workout, or do a boxing workout. If you can actually put weight on the ankle, do a low impact version of a workout.

2. If you have chronic plantar fasciitis that's preventing you from running, there are other exercises you can do. If you have access to a gym: elliptical, bike. If not: low impact aerobics or kickboxing with a video (I can help you with some ideas). Or, focus more on weight training.

3. If your knees hurt: Again, it depends on what kind of knee pain. I would never say to push through knee pain, but there are things you can do that *don't* make it worse. You just have to see what works for you.

Again, let me emphasize that I want you to be careful with injuries. But, if your ankle is broken, you can still work your shoulders :-)

Illness/fatigue
- This cough is killing me.
- I can't breathe.
- I have a migraine and can't even concentrate, much less exercise.
- I have adrenal fatigue and can barely muster the energy to get out of bed.

This is another area where I want you to be careful. Err on the side of caution when you're sick. You have to be completely honest with yourself: Learn when it's too much for you, and learn when you may be taking it too easy on yourself. If you can't stop coughing or can't breathe, you probably shouldn't do a tough cardio workout. If you can barely get out of bed or have a migraine, try something easy and simple for 5 minutes. If it's too much, stop and go back to bed, knowing that you tried.

Children
- The children won't go to sleep.
-I am having to answer phones for our company and work on the computer and I has taken all day. Now, I do not have any time left to work out before I get my daughter from school. I can't take my daughter to the gym with me, because she is not allowed in the gym area. Only 12 and over. So, she would have to go to the gym's "fit kids" room. This is like a room full of little Kids being watched somewhat by a college student. ( she is 11 going on 21!)

I have had this problem before, many times. My son gets on my back while doing pushups. My daughter cries if I put her down for more than 5 minutes. Sometimes all the stars have to align just right for the kids to cooperate for me to do a workout. But, I make it happen. No, it's not the easiest way for me to do a workout, but when I'm determined, I make it work. (Tip: I use videos most of the time for this.)

Other: These are the ones that are tricky. I'm just going to answer each of these one at a time:
It doesn't work! No, it doesn't if you don't do it. Also, you need to realize that there are other benefits to exercise besides just looking good in a swimsuit. Even though I gained 60 pounds with my first pregnancy, my blood pressure and cholesterol were absolutely perfect because of my years of working out.

I just don't feel like it. I go back to this: Try 5 minutes. If you feel like stopping then, go ahead. But, chances are you may feel like continuing. It's really a win-win.

My shoes are too loose. There is a growing movement of barefoot exercisers. I have been known to workout barefoot at home. I don't run barefoot, but I want to (one day). Basically, try it without the shoes. I used to be TERRIFIED of going barefoot, but the research has shown lately that it could be better for you. It's not as scary anymore, and I actually think it helps to build up those feet muscles..

I need to eat first/I just ate and can't workout for at least an hour and a half. This just takes a little bit of planning. If you know you need to eat first, eat something *very light*. If you know you're going to work out later, don't eat the biggest lunch of your life.

The Christmas tree is on fire. I got nothing. You need to put out the fire. Workout later.

I'm planning on exercising tomorrow, so I shouldn't today because that will make me too tired. There are actually days when I think this. In most cases, it's really not necessary: Don't do the exact same workout two days in a row. Do a cardio workout one day, then do strength or yoga the next day. Now, in my case, if I have an 8 mile run scheduled on Saturday, I probably won't do the world's heaviest leg workout on Friday. But, I can still do something else. I can stretch, I can do abs, I can do yoga... so, don't worry about being too tired the next day. Just do a little planning.

I'm late to the class. I know it's a pain to walk in late to a fitness class, and often, it's frowned upon by the instructor. However, aren't you on your way to the gym anyway? Go get on a treadmill or the elliptical, and workout during the time you had set aside for class. If the class wasn't going to be at the gym, go for a walk/run outside, or DO A VIDEO.

It's raining. Come run with me in the rain. It's fun. But seriously, if you're planning an outdoor workout, and the weather is just too scary, do something inside. I have a few video ideas I can give you....(Are you seeing a theme with the videos?)

I'm having a baby today. I used this excuse. I was so determined to workout up until giving birth. I really wanted to say "I worked out the day I gave birth". However, we had to be at the hospital at 6:00 am for my daughter's induction, and I figured if I got up early enough to workout... well, I needed to save my energy. Also, I couldn't have anything to eat or drink. So, I proudly used that excuse. If you're having a baby today, too, feel free to use it as well.
It's too cold. Bundle up, or do a video.
It's too hot. Stay inside, or do a video.
I should be studying. Can you spare 30 minutes? 15 minutes? For your health?
I have to do the laundry. Put the laundry in, then workout.
The cat's asleep on my lap. Put the cat down. I know it's tough, but this is for you.
I'm on the HCG diet and you're not supposed to workout. Um? I don't think I would ever want to go on a program that wouldn't let me workout.

Times when you shouldn't exercise:
- You are seriously sick.
- Your doctor has said you shouldn't.
- Your Christmas tree is on fire.

The Bottom Line:
- Be flexible: You may not always be able to do the exact workout you want to do. You may want to run, but can't find childcare, so do a cardio workout in your living room. You may want to do a 50 minute strength workout, but wake up late, so instead do a 15 minute HiiT. The important thing is DO SOMETHING
- Have a back up. Have something you can do if your first choice doesn't work for you. Do a workout video. Go to the gym (or go for a walk) during lunch.

Remember this:
"If it is important to you, you will find a way. If not, you'll find an excuse."

Thoughts I Had During Today's Run...

- "This is hard".
- "NSync's Pop really is a fun song."
- "I don't think I'm going to make it through the entire 8 miles."
- "I should just quit at 3 miles."
- "Oh no! That dog looks just like the dog that bit me. What if they got the wrong dog? Is that the same dog? Is it going to bite me? That was an $800 hospital bill. Should I keep running. I know, I'll turn and yell at it. There, that seemed to work, and I'm sure the neighbors don't think I'm a crazy person at all.."
- "I am going to have such a sexy sock tan..."
Sexy

- "Who came up with the idea to run long distances? That's crazy."
- "Dang, that blog post about excuses is going to be hard. Those people are throwing some crazy excuses at me (watch for the post tomorrow)."
- "When this race is over I'm going back to no more than 4 miles at a time."
- "I ran out of water. Again."

In the end, I made it 6.46 miles and just had to stop. I think it was a combination of being sick this week and running late in the day after the kids wore me down a bit.

I know I will make it through the race. The excitement will help push me through. But, I'm going to get the time goal of 2:30 out of my head. I just want to finish. This way, when I run the Women's Half in September, surely it will be a PR :-)

Fun in the Weightroom

I'm not sure what weird crooked biceps exercise she's doing. Also, I'm worried about her nails.

This week has not gone how I planned workout wise.

I declared that I would do more weights... then I took two days off from everything because I got sick.
I completed ONE workout before work the entire week, and that was Monday.

So, I was DETERMINED to get a total body weight workout in on Friday.

Here's what I did (the details are boring, they're mainly just there for me to use as a record)

Warmup: Walk to gym

Lower Body Superset (repeated twice)

16 Squats
16 Static Lunges (each leg)

Upper Body (each repeated twice):

Superset 1:
Lat Rows (15 @ 55 lbs)
Push Ups (8 kick booty awesome perfect form on the toes)

Superset 2:
Lat Pulldown (15 @ 60 lbs)
Shoulder press (15 @ 30 lb barbell)

Giant Set 1:
Triceps Skull Crusher (15 @ 20 lbs)
Biceps Curl (15 @ 25 lbs)
Lateral Raise (15 @ 10 lbs each)

Giant Set 2:
Triceps Dip (20)
Biceps Curl with Barbell (Set 1: 10 @ 30 lbs. Set 2: 15 @ 20 lbs)
Upright Row with Barbell (Set 1: 10 @ 30 lbs. Set 2: 15 @ 20 lbs)

Abs Giant Set (twice):
20 Crunches
20 Heels to Heaven
20 Oblique V-ups

A nice total body workout. I didn't want to overdue the legs since I'm scheduled to run 9 miles Saturday.

Also, boys in the weight room can sometimes be very stupid. It's a good thing I had my "I need more cowbell" shirt and my super cool fanny pack fuel belt on. It kept people from bothering me...

April Push Up Challenge, Day 1!

Happy April!
(First of all, let me start out by saying this is NOT an April Fool's Joke. I never joke about pushups....)

Over at Sarah Fitness we are starting a challenge this month to help us work on pushups. Folks were saying they were having trouble with this particular move, and I was also feeling the need, so we decided to tackle it head on.

From here
Here are the rules:
1. Start where you are.
2. Set a goal.
3. Follow the assignments as I post them

We will be resting in between assignments. Don't worry- you won't be doing pushups every day. Also, please don't stop doing your other programs. As fulfilling as pushups can be, they don't do it all. If you are doing one of your other programs and come across some pushups on a "Non-Challenge" day, just do as many as you can modified. Don't worry too much about it. You'll be really "BRINGING IT" on the Challenge days.

Here is the assignment for day 1:

Pushup Challenge, Day 1 assignment: Complete as many as you can with good form. If your goal is to do them on your toes, do them on your toes. Same with knees. You may take set breaks, but this should all count as one set. This is your benchmark. Record this number and share with the group if you want. And.... GO!

So, hop on over to Sarah Fitness to join the challenge!

Happy Friday!

Sarah
(Did I mention our Facebook page? Good. Check it out.)

Also....
I'm going to need some more cowbell today. Kthanks.
